It’s time we view the bog turtle not only as an endangered species, but as a valuable natural asset that has the uncommon ability generate international interest. After all, how many people do you know that have ever seen a real live bog turtle—or even a bog for that matter?

The University of Maryland has adopted the terrapin as its mascot. Why not make Maryland the “Turtle State?” The economic impact of turtle tourism could be the Maryland’s biggest money maker. Can you imagine turtle festivals, turtle parades, and a cabin turtle tourism industry? Ever thought that you’d take a turtle to the bank or consider a turtle as Maryland’s economic hero?

The Maryland Maple Grove Wildlife Sanctuary is grass roots effort trying to prevent extinction of this rare and endangered species. The Maryland Maple Grove Wildlife Sanctuary is trying to preserve its own non-tidal wetlands, stop our trees from being uprooted as well as stop pollution of these headwaters, the Prettyboy Water reservoir, and the Chesapeake Bay!
